Dear Friends,

here is my piece on the solidarities that have upheld the Farmers Protest on Delhi’s borders for The Caravan Magazine. I explicitly talk about the solidarities between Sikh-Left, Haryana-Panjab, men-women, Dalit-Jutt, other states; the fact is there are many more: singer-activist, young-old, religious, and I am hoping for rural-urban.

Here is a quote from the piece in view of the affidavit the government proposes to file in the Supreme Court about ‘Khalistan’ at the protests: “In Partition, we lost Nanakana Sahib and Kartarpur Sahib”—shrines associated with the Sikh Guru Nanak. “If Khalistan becomes a reality, we will lose Patna Sahib and Huzoor Sahib as well”—associated with Guru Gobind Singh. “What would we be left with? Look around, everybody is recognising the Sikhs, langars are being served, jaikaras are being shouted. What can be more Sikh than this?”

Dear Friends,

I was honoured that on August 15, 8.30 pm IST, I was invited to a panel discussion with Harinder Singh and Tridivesh Singh Maini. This is upon invite from Sikhri – Sikh Research Institute – a premier Sikh organisation in the US.

73 years ago, two nation-states were carved by the British mapmaking: Hindustan and Pakistan. The historical Sikh Homeland in The Panjab was divided by the Radcliffe line. In now truncated Indian Panjab, a proportion of the Sikhs led many campaigns to fight for economic, political, state, human, and religious rights. What’s next to secure the Sikh aspirations and the Panjab’s autonomy?

The week the Canadian PM Justin Trudeau visited I watched the blown up controversy between two friendly nations with increasing dismay. The word that caused the controversy was Khalistan. Honestly, I felt cheated of my own decision in the mid 1990s to not opt for a PhD abroad and choosing to stay in India and deal with issues here. I felt now, a quarter century later, the very people I believed in had betrayed me by going silent.

This is a piece written with a weary heart. I am very thankful to Aditi Sengupta for carrying it without cuts, it gives me hope. After all one friend be one’s reason to stay, find home.

Please read here …

Later Punjab Today also carried it with original headline. Please read here …
